Weeding Through the Distractions | Thomas & Mandi Griffin
📖 “Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17)
Clearing Away What Clouds Our Vision
Imagine this: your day is at its peak. The schedule is packed, life is noisy, and your mind is racing in a hundred directions.
Now pause. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Whisper the name of Jesus.
When you open your eyes, suddenly everything feels different—your perspective has shifted through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Why was it so hard before? Because distractions cloud our vision and crowd out our peace.
What We Found Under the Weeds
Recently, my son was mowing the yard after days of heavy rain. He came in smiling and said, “Mom, I solved all your problems. The mouse is gone!”
My kids know one thing I cannot handle: mice. With all the rain we had been getting, they were looking for dry shelter, and our house was not open for visitors.
As he mowed and weeded, he uncovered a mouse living in a thick pile of brush. I didn’t even know it was there. I just wanted the weeds cleared away so our yard looked less like a jungle. But here’s the thing—I was distracted by what I could see on the surface. I didn’t realize what was hidden underneath it all.
Underneath the weeds that looked like nothing more than an annoyance, life was moving. Things were happening that I could not see. Isn’t that just like our spiritual walk? We often focus only on what looks messy, inconvenient, or overwhelming, when God is showing us where growth is happening, where His Spirit is moving, and where He wants to redirect our attention.
Weeding Through Spiritual Distractions
Friends, life is full of distractions. So many “shiny objects” promise quick relief or temporary joy, but they never last. They pull us away from the deeper work God wants to do in our hearts.
So let me ask:
Are you filling your days with things that leave you feeling empty?
Are you trying to patch over a void only God can fill?
Are you feeding your flesh while your spirit feels starved?
If this is you, take heart. God is not angry or disappointed. He is patient, forgiving, and deeply loving. His grace is sufficient, even in our distractions. And right now, He wants to show you what lies beneath the weeds.
An Invitation to Clear the Space
Here’s my encouragement: put on your gloves, lace up your boots, and head out into the thick of it. You don’t have to clear it all at once. Just start one section at a time.
Close your eyes. Breathe deep. Speak the name of Jesus. And begin clearing away what’s been holding you back.
Underneath the weeds, there is freedom, clarity, and blessing waiting for you.
A Prayer for Today
Dear Abba,
Help me see past the distractions and into what You are doing beneath the surface. Give me strength to step into the thick of it and begin clearing away the things that do not belong. Show me what needs to go so that my heart can be filled with Your peace, Your presence, and Your truth. Thank You for being patient with me and for always leading me closer to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
